They are excellent at purifying indoor air, reducing harmful substances like formaldehyde, making them ideal houseplants. Despite having "orchid" in its name, the snake plant is not related to orchids at all. It's a type of succulent, although its appearance might suggest otherwise, looking more like a foliage plant. Taxonomically, however, Sansevieria belongs to the Asparagaceae family, tribe Asparageae, and is a tropical plant. Thus, it can be classified as a succulent. Snake plants have numerous origins, with around 70 species distributed globally from Africa to Asia. The variety featured here is the Silver Hahnii Sansevieria (Sansevieria trifasciata 'Silver Hahnii'), or 'Marginated Silver Hahnii'. It has light green, silvery leaves edged with pale yellow, and some leaves also bear green veining, making it exceptionally attractive! This variety is uncommon in regular flower markets and is considered quite rare. Its care is similar to other common varieties, being drought-tolerant and requiring minimal watering. Snake plants are not demanding regarding their growing environment, making them perfect potted plants for decorating living rooms, studies, and other spaces. Their most significant benefit is air purification. Experts state that snake plants can absorb over 80% of harmful indoor gases, with a particular strength in absorbing formaldehyde. They are highly practical for newly renovated homes, combining functionality with beauty. Snake plants can also help with radiation protection, making them a top choice for beginners in indoor plants! | Light | Very easy to grow, drought-tolerant, and relatively shade-tolerant. It thrives in indoor areas with diffused light. Direct outdoor sunlight should not exceed 2 hours. Generally, snake plants prefer warm, sunny environments, but they are highly adaptable. If placed in direct sun, they can survive, and their leaf color may become lighter. If kept indoors due to insufficient light, their growth will slow, leaves will turn a deeper green, and they may become leggy. It's still beneficial to take them out for occasional sun exposure for better growth! | Watering | Remember, snake plants originate from arid environments. Therefore, use a "dry-then-wet" watering method. In simple terms, "better dry than wet." Water only when the growing medium is completely dry to prevent root rot from overwatering. Most common snake plant varieties do not require frequent watering, about once every two weeks. However, always adjust based on your specific growing conditions. Snake plants are very drought-tolerant; most failures occur due to overwatering! | Soil | Snake plants are native to hot and dry regions, so they require soil with excellent breathability. We use a potting mix combined with a specific ratio of perlite. LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) is used at the bottom to enhance dryness or drainage.
