About the Artist | Hao-Yen Chang Born by the sea, Hao-Yen Chang grew up surrounded by rocks and tides, the textures of the ocean and its shores deeply imprinted in his creative spirit. His intuitive sensitivity to materials imbues his work with a distinctive sense of strength and a raw, natural aesthetic. Having previously worked with black clay in wood firing, he now explores porcelain clay for this series. The purity and translucence of porcelain clay allow for the delicate and unpredictable ash glaze patterns to emerge, creating a different dimension compared to his earlier black clay pieces. The result is brighter, more refined, and reminiscent of the traces left by rocks and waves under intense heat. Characteristics of the Work: 1. Each piece is entirely handmade, with unique color and ash glaze patterns. 2. Ash glaze, fire marks, and glaze spots resulting from high-temperature wood firing are natural phenomena, representing the life journey of a handcrafted item. 3. Porcelain clay develops a fine, glossy finish when fired, with more pronounced fire marks. Each piece is a unique, irreproducible creation. 4.
