Chawan

This tea bowl was made in my small pottery workshop here in Taiwan. I used local Taiwanese clay and then applied a shino glaze, made famous by Japanese potters. Living in Asia for over 20 years has influenced my work greatly. I love making the humble tea bowl. I love looking at the form and holding them in my hands. Each is very different and has their own personality. As for all my bowls I wanted to create a piece that was original and showed the hand of the maker. I did this by throwing a nice full form, carving the footring, and glazing in layers. I also wanted to reveal some of the bare clay. I added some iron brush strokes that kind of came through in parts of the bowl. Be the owner of a handmade tea bowl, made on the beautiful island of Taiwan.
