Sandalwood is sourced from various countries, including India, Fiji, Australia, and Tonga, with Indian sandalwood being of the highest quality. The Indian government has long regulated the export of raw sandalwood logs, allowing only smaller pieces to be exported, which is why you often find wood cut into quarters or eighths (see image 4). The term "Lao Shan" (old mountain) refers to trees that have reached a certain age – according to online information, at least 60 years old – and the wood has been aged for at least 20 to 30 years after harvesting. True vintage Indian sandalwood is hard, oily, and possesses a rich, warm, and subtle fragrance. Wood that would crack over time has already done so during the 20-30 year aging period, making this vintage Indian sandalwood exceptionally stable. It is highly prized for carving religious statues and is an excellent material for seals. We decided to create this batch of stamps because our family members noticed that the sandalwood seal materials commonly available on the market did not have the same quality fragrance as our own stock. This prompted our father (the owner) to retrieve the aged wood from storage and commission artisans to craft these round stamps. The quantity is limited.
