In Japan, it is revered alongside cherry blossoms as a "sacred flower." In Japanese culture, the camellia is also known as "Wabisuke." Legend has it that this variety was brought to Japan from Korea by a person named Wabisuke during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's expedition to Korea, hence its name. "When the camellia petals fall, the spring day is stirred." This is a beautiful haiku carved in stone at the Hōnen-in Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto. The Lore of Magatama and Izumo-style Magatama Magatama have appeared in Japan since the Kofun period, over 5,000 years ago. The origin of Izumo-style magatama dates back 2,600 years to Japan's Yayoi period. The creation of Izumo-style magatama was discontinued during the Heian period. After being lost for 900 years, the technique and knowledge were rediscovered and passed down by Ito Sen'yu in the Izumo region during the Edo period, leading to the revival and continuation of Izumo-style magatama to this day.
