Exquisite 1930s/40s Art Deco-style Czech Rainbow Glass Antique Brass Necklace Czech glassmaking has a history dating back to the 9th century, and by the 18th century, it was a world-renowned region for crystal glass production. Rainbow Iris glass emerged in Czechoslovakia in the early 1900s, designed to mimic the clear, iridescent glow of Iris quartz or aurora quartz, refracting a spectrum of rainbow light. By adding red, blue, and green dyes into transparent glass, this type of glass, known as Rainbow Iris glass, became highly popular between the 1920s and 1950s. Early rainbow glass featured softer colors, often with block-like dyeing and backed with translucent settings. Later productions tended to have more vibrant colors, typically with linear color distribution, encased in thin metal foil or set in metal-backed bases to achieve a sparkle similar to diamonds or rhinestones. This antique brass necklace with rainbow glass incorporates two distinct crafting methods. The main stone is a block-dyed, teardrop-cut crystal glass, complemented by eight smaller, linearly dyed glass stones set with open-backed prongs to enhance translucency. The central metal accent of the necklace features a design transitioning from late Art Deco to mid-century style—simple and geometric, yet not overly complex. Art Deco, originating in France, flourished between the World Wars, characterized by a blend of fluid and sharp lines, emphasizing mathematical dynamism within its elegance. The clasp is an early, larger spring ring clasp with a robust spring mechanism, commonly seen in the late 1930s to early 1950s.
