Its Latin name translates to "beyond the forest." Before 2017, my only knowledge of it came from vampire films, conjuring images of ancient castles and dark, dense forests. It wasn't until I met my boyfriend, who is from there, that I had a genuine reason to travel to Romania. My first visit was in the dead of winter, during a period of persistent rain. I spent some time exploring the old town, where remnants of past grandeur were still visible, and experienced a Christmas deeply intertwined with religion. Afterwards, I ventured away from the crowds, heading from the vast, green plains towards the slightly higher hills and mountains. Having never truly seen snow, I remember being mesmerized by the snow-laden fir trees along the winding mountain roads. The branches, reaching towards the sky, caught the falling snow, refracting the afternoon sunlight as it broke through the clouds. It felt as if an invisible hand had adorned a Christmas tree with golden ribbons and sprinkled it with a generous dusting of fine gold powder. I spent a month immersed in this Eastern European country, which is relatively unfamiliar to Asians. I have always longed to revisit it in a different season.
