Chē qú is the largest among marine shells, with a diameter of up to 1.8m. The name Chē qú originated in the Han Dynasty, because the outer shell has radial grooves, resembling ancient chariot tracks, hence the name Chē qú. Later generations, because it is as hard as stone, added the character for stone next to Chē qú. Chē qú, pearls, coral, and amber are honored in the West as the Four Great Organic Gemstones, and in Chinese Buddhism, along with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, agate, pearls, and amber, are revered as the Seven Treasures. Types of Chē qú: Divided into un-beautified Chē qú (porcelain white), semi-beautified Chē qú (milky white), fully beautified Chē qú (transparent white), yellow Chē qú [often with cracks], red Chē qú, golden-threaded Chē qú, and filigree Chē qú, among others.
