We are often asked how 《freehand embroidery》 differs from standard machine embroidery. Regular machine embroidery involves a machine reading a design and automatically stitching it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical patterns. In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is a craft where an artisan manually moves the fabric to create the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece possesses a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-stitching. The process involves transferring a sketch onto the fabric and then, while referencing the original artwork, stitching in sync with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – a remarkable skill that is astonishing even to imagine. Currently, there are just over 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 are able to do it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, a mere 10 individuals can execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled alone is not enough; embroidery also requires a keen sense of aesthetics. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, we entrust our embroidery work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since the age of 15, giving her 31 years of experience. Moreover, she has an exceptional artistic sense, and we have complete confidence in her abilities. Due to recent economic development, traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people learning this skill today. With the number of artisans expected to decrease further, Vietnamese freehand embroidery is precariously poised, facing the possibility of disappearing within the next decade or so.
