【Waving to the Waves/ mug (Blue)】
Inspired by Hokusai’s renowned ukiyo-e print "Under a Wave off Kanagawa,” this work cleverly incorporates one of Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s anthropomorphic cats, who stands on shore playfully beckoning to the approaching “eagle’s claw waves” with a fan that displays an Edo-era Japanese flag...an element of humor inserted between the dynamic motion of the sea and the still presence of Mt. Fuji.
Ukiyo-e master-Utagawa Kuniyoshi loves cats and is crazy, and he keeps cats everywhere in his studio, even holding one in his arms while painting.
The obsession with cats makes his cats lively and playful.
The cat is highlighted with a bas-relief, and the tail is treated in a three-dimensional manner, turning it into a part of the handle, which is more interesting.
"Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" by Katsushika Hokusai depicts 36 different views of Mount Fuji.
Among them, the "Kaifujii Kaifeng Kaiqing" depicting Mount Aka Fuji and the "Surfing in Kanagawa" on Mount Fuji in the waves are their representative works.
The majestic eagle claw waves are treated with bas-relief to draw a sense of space with the background.
Mount Fuji in the distance seemed to be submerged by huge waves.
