【Scientific Principle】Shrink Plastic ◆ Thermoplastic These plastics have a chain or branched molecular structure. Their molecules can move freely at high temperatures. They soften and deform upon heating without undergoing a chemical reaction, allowing them to be repeatedly heated, softened, and melted, then solidified upon cooling. Most single-use plastic food containers and packaging are made from thermoplastics like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), used for cling film and food containers. ◆ Thermosetting Plastic These plastics form a network structure through cross-linking reactions. Before becoming a finished product, they are heated, undergoing irreversible chemical reactions such as vulcanization. Once molded, they cannot be reshaped even with further heating. Only specific plastic food containers and packaging use thermosetting plastics. Common examples include polycarbonate, used in water bottles, and polyether sulfones, used for high-temperature resistant containers for food utensils, medical equipment, and electronic components. Our creation utilizes the nature of shrink plastic as a thermoplastic. When heated, it shrinks and thickens. By varying the heating time with a heat gun, we achieve a shape where the petal tips are thicker and the edges are thinner.
