Furthermore, 108 is also the sum of the celestial and terrestrial spirits in Taoist culture, with wearing such beads believed to offer protection. The common explanation for the 108 types of afflictions refers to the six senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind), each experiencing pleasure, pain, or neutrality, totaling eighteen. Each of the six senses also has three states: liking, disliking, or indifference, totaling another eighteen. Combined, these amount to thirty-six afflictions, which, when multiplied by the three realms of past, present, and future, result in 108 afflictions.
