We are often asked, "How is freehand embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery involves a machine reading an embroidery pattern and automatically stitching it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs. In contrast, freehand embroidery is an artisan skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric as they stitch the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidery pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that closely resembles hand embroidery. It’s an incredible craft that involves transferring a sketch to the fabric and stitching while following the original design, guided by the up-and-down movement of the sewing machine needle – it’s almost unimaginable. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of those, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of the embroidery certification. Among them, a mere 10 individuals possess the skill to create the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, exceptional skill alone isn't enough; embroidery also requires a keen sense of aesthetics. Even subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. Therefore, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, an artisan with the highest level of expertise. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years. Moreover, he possesses an outstanding sense of design. We place our complete trust in him. With recent economic development, Vietnam, like many places, faces challenges in preserving traditional crafts. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, skilled artisans now train apprentices. Hun has trained four individuals so far, but he notes that there are no young people today who can master this technique. Due to rapid economic growth, manual craftsmanship is being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease even further. This trend is accelerating faster than in Japan, and as the national system offers little protection, Vietnamese freehand embroidery faces a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
