Background of the Figure: The Sixth Patriarch, Huineng (638–713), was the sixth patriarch of Chan Buddhism in China, revered as the founder of the "Sudden Enlightenment Dharma of the Southern School." The Platform Sutra is a compilation of his teachings and insights, forming the foundation of Chinese Chan Buddhist thought. This verse, presented to the Fifth Patriarch Hongren upon their first meeting, reveals the sudden enlightenment philosophy of "no-form," "no-thought," and "no-abode," making it one of the most renowned phrases in East Asian Buddhist history. Vernacular Interpretation: True enlightenment is not sought externally. The mind is like the Bodhi tree, which is not a tree; the state of mind is clear, and there is no need for a mirror stand. If the inherent nature is emptiness and all phenomena are non-existent, then from where can worldly dust arise? True purity resides in a single thought. Design Interpretation: "The Enlightened One in the Woods" presents the state of "originally not a single thing" through the posture of a Buddha amidst nature. The statue is not placed centrally or elevated but is instead adorned with moss and vines, which paradoxically enhances its sense of freedom. Surrounding the figure are gnarled wood, unique stones, and layered mosses, arranged not for symmetry or a focal point but allowed to spread organically, just as enlightenment arises not from form but from clarity of mind. Within this miniature landscape, there is no pursuit of opulence or tranquility; simply allowing all things to exist "as they are" is enough to sit with the enlightened one. May this small realm evoke a moment of pure clarity.
