Sandalwood originates from various countries, including India, Fiji, Australia, and Tonga, with Indian sandalwood being of the highest quality. The Indian government has long regulated the export of raw sandalwood, permitting only small pieces to be exported, hence the market often sees wood cut into quarters or eighths (see image 4). It is called "old mountain" sandalwood because the trees must reach a certain age (online sources suggest at least 60 years) and the wood must be aged for at least 20-30 years after felling. Therefore, genuine Indian old mountain sandalwood is hard, contains natural oils, and has a mellow, warm, non-pungent fragrance. As it has been aged for 20-30 years after felling, any potential cracks would have already appeared, making Indian old mountain sandalwood very stable in quality. It is a superior material for carving Buddhist statues and an excellent choice for seals. This batch of stamps was made because family members, while looking for seal materials at a shop, found that the sandalwood available commercially did not have as good a scent as their own stock. This prompted the owner to retrieve the stored wood from home and have a craftsman create these stamps. Currently, only round seals are available, and quantities are limited.
