◤ About Shoushan Stone:
In the mountainous region near Fuzhou, Fujian Province, lies a village named Shoushan. The Shoushan stone deposits are found amidst the surrounding mountains and wild streams of Shoushan Village. Shoushan stone, scientifically known as pyrophyllite or lapidary, is known for its moist texture and vibrant colors. It is one of the earliest discovered pyrophyllite mines in China and a preferred material for colored stone carving. With advancements in mining and analysis techniques, it's now understood that Shoushan stone's mineral composition is not limited to pyrophyllite but also includes quartz, kaolinite, and other elements. The color, hardness, and clarity of Shoushan stone are directly related to its mineral composition, explaining its rich and varied hues.
◤ Characteristics of Shoushan Stone:
According to historical records, the four famous seals stones popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties were Shoushan stone, Qingtian stone, Changhua stone, and Balin stone. Stones suitable for seal carving generally have a hardness of 2-3 degrees. Shoushan stone, with its fine texture, moderate hardness, and ease of carving, has been highly appreciated by calligraphers, painters, and seal engravers. From the late Qing Dynasty through the early Republic of China, China experienced invasions by foreign powers, civil war, and the subsequent relocation of the Nationalist government to Taiwan. Over time, as the people of Taiwan gradually settled into a stable and prosperous life, they began to yearn for early Chinese cultural relics and products. Seal stone carving was one such interest. As the number of people who appreciated these seal stones grew, knowledgeable individuals began to procure raw stones from mainland China for Taiwanese enthusiasts to collect. The four famous stones possess natural, inherent colors and a delicate, moist, gentle touch, making them highly sought after and leading to a fervent collecting trend.
During Taiwan's golden age following its economic reforms in 1976, China saw large-scale mining of seal stone raw materials, primarily for export to Taiwan. However, natural resources are finite. To this day, the mining sources for raw stones have become increasingly depleted, with the most exquisite portions mined at that time largely sold to Taiwan. In other words, Taiwan retains the most refined seal stone artworks, making them exceptionally precious.
