The MA-1 flight jacket, also known as the "bomber jacket," was developed by the U.S. military in the 1950s. To meet the demands of jet aircraft operations, pilots flying at higher altitudes and lower temperatures required new levels of functionality, safety, and comfort in their attire. The MA-1 replaced the cotton B-15 flight jacket, becoming the standard issue for the U.S. Air Force. Compared to the B-15, the MA-1 introduced significant design changes. Firstly, the original wool collar was deemed unsuitable for combat due to the noise of jet engines and the use of new parachutes; the wool collar could snag on helmets, hindering operations. Consequently, the MA-1 adopted a double-layered nylon stand-up collar. Functionally, the MA-1 featured zippered pockets on the chest and left arm, along with other thoughtful details. To adapt to cold climates, ribbed cuffs and hem were added to the left arm, allowing for a snug fit, ease of wear, and enhanced warmth. The iconic bright orange lining was designed to be visible when the jacket was worn inside-out, aiding rescue efforts for paratroopers.
