Lesson 1: Grinding — The "Trial and Shaping" of Youth
Corresponding Stage: Growth and exploration before age 20
Green beans are hard and full of potential, but without hardship, their aroma cannot be released. Youth is like coffee beans entering a grinder, a process of building self-awareness and learning.
Core of the Lesson: Learning to accept the "grinding" of circumstances. The pains of this period (exams, failures, setbacks) are meant to shape you into the most suitable state for extraction.
Life Insight: Grind too coarsely, and life becomes bland; grind too finely, and anxiety easily arises. Finding the right degree of fragmentation is the primary practice before entering society.
Lesson 2: Blooming — The "Accumulation and Breath" of Adulthood
Corresponding Stage: Career beginnings and steady growth from 20 to 35 years old
As hot water is first poured, the coffee bed pulses and expands like a heart, releasing trapped gases. This is the crucial 30 seconds before extraction.
Core of the Lesson: Mastering the art of "waiting." Before rushing to make your mark, give yourself time to bloom.
Life Insight: This is a stage for purging inner impurities (pride, impatience). Don't rush to fill the pot; accumulate energy in quietude first for a more layered eventual breakthrough.
Lesson 3: Pouring — The "Stability and Balance" of Midlife
Corresponding Stage: Taking on responsibilities and finding life's rhythm from 35 to 50 years old
This is the most extended phase of pour-over, requiring a steady stream, precise circular motions, without interruption or overflow.
Core of the Lesson: Practicing "water control stability." Midlife is filled with pressures, demanding a balance between family, career, and self.
Life Insight: Too strong a stream will disturb the coffee bed (leading to life's chaos); too weak a stream will fail to extract sweetness (indicating a lack of drive). Maintaining a stable rhythm is key to preserving the flavor of life.
Lesson 4: Filtering — The "Choices and Purity" of Mature Years
Corresponding Stage: Letting go and wisdom settling from 50 to 65 years old
The coffee liquid drips through the filter paper, leaving residues behind. This is a process of selection.
Core of the Lesson: Practicing a "filtered life." Let go of unnecessary social engagements, excessive material pursuits, and retain only the purest essence of life.
Life Insight: Those who know how to let go will have a clear and bright cup of coffee. The value in this stage lies not in what is possessed, but in what remains beautifully.
Lesson 5: Aftertaste — The "Embrace and Fulfillment" of Later Years
Corresponding Stage: Graceful aging and legacy after 65 years old
When extraction ends, the coffee in the cup transforms in flavor as it cools (from hot aroma to sweet and sour notes). The final lingering sweetness in the throat is the true soul of the bean.
Core of the Lesson: Experiencing the "transformation of temperature." Accept the tranquility that comes with life cooling down, and appreciate the beauty in imperfection.
Life Insight: In later years, bitterness fades, leaving behind a deep sweetness and a long-lasting aftertaste. This is a summation and tribute to life's ebb and flow.
