Established in 1931 during the Japanese era, it served as the administrative and public security institution of the region. After World War II, it functioned as a local government office and was later reorganized into the Huwei Police Station following the implementation of local self-governance. Huwei’s grid-style urban layout was designed to support industrial development, and the district office—centrally located in the core area—served as an important witness to the town's growth. As one of the few remaining district offices from the Japanese colonial period, the building holds significant historical value. Architecturally, the building is notable for its hybrid construction, a “semi-wooden” structure combining timber with other materials. Its red-brick appearance influenced the architectural style of Huwei at that time, and it retains rare counterweight sliding windows, now seldom seen in Taiwan. In alignment with the rising trend of adaptive reuse of historic buildings, and acknowledging Yunlin’s importance in Taiwanese glove puppetry culture, the county commissioned National Yunlin University of Science and Technology to plan and redesign the site. Restoration work was completed in December 2006.
