From a farmer's son to an internationally acclaimed calligrapher, Tu Chung-Kao has forged his unique artistic path with unwavering dedication and focus. He believes that even from an environment of illiteracy, a passion for characters can lead one to carve out their own value within the strokes of ink. In his early years, Tu Chung-Kao studied Northern Stele inscriptions under Wang Kai-Ho, later apprenticing with Wang Chuang-Wei, becoming one of the "Seven Disciples of Wang." His foundation in calligraphy is profound. He also studied landscape painting with Fu Chuan-Fu. Although he later dedicated himself to calligraphy, the training in composition and spatial awareness is deeply ingrained in his works. Subsequently, he visited renowned calligraphers, seeking advice from Wang Pei-Yueh, Hsieh Tsung-An, and Yao Meng-Ku. Under Wang Pei-Yueh's recommendation, he further honed his skills by studying seal script with the master Hsi Nan-Hsun, progressively refining his technique and comprehending the subtleties of the Way of Calligraphy. In 1977, Tu Chung-Kao met Master Nan Huai-Chin and delved deeply into Buddhist studies and Zen meditation. From then on, his creative vision expanded beyond technical refinement to encompass the embodiment of life's philosophies. He transformed "calligraphy" into a form of spiritual practice, observing the self and reflecting the universe within each stroke. His characters are not merely words; they are the flow of the mind, the pulse of the spirit. Tu Chung-Kao is more than just a calligrapher; he is a "joyful living" practitioner who uses writing to embody life philosophies.
