**Reading Map Postcard - Yushan** Yushan is Taiwan's highest peak and the tallest mountain in East Asia. A century ago, Japanese explorers first ascended Yushan and determined its height, finding it to be taller than Mount Fuji, a symbol of the Japanese spirit. Consequently, Emperor Meiji bestowed upon it the name "Niitakayama" (New High Mountain). In earlier times, climbing Yushan often involved taking a train on the Duoduo-ka logging railway from Alishan to Duoduo-ka (Tataga), after which the trek upwards would begin. The route passed by Yushan's Front, West, and Niitaka-shimo (present-day Paiyun Lodge) stations before reaching the main peak. This map depicts a west-to-east perspective. The commonly seen photographs of Yushan's main peak are often taken from a north-to-south viewpoint, looking south towards the main peak from Yushan's North Peak.
