You might often wonder, "How is “freehand embroidery” different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery relies on a machine that reads an embroidery design and automatically stitches it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical pieces. In contrast, “freehand embroidery” is a craft where an artisan manually guides the fabric to create the design. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery possesses a texture that closely resembles hand embroidery. The process involves transferring a sketch onto the fabric and meticulously stitching while referencing the original artwork, coordinating the needle's up-and-down movement – a truly remarkable artisan skill that's incredible just to imagine. In Vietnam, there are currently just over 400 individuals who can perform freehand embroidery. However, only about 50 of them can do so professionally. Furthermore, a mere 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among these, only 10 possess the skill to execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. But being skilled isn't enough; embroidery also requires artistry. A subtle nuance can dramatically alter the overall impression. This is why Pangandaran entrusts their designs to Hun, an artisan with exceptional talent. Hun is currently 46 years old and has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, boasting 31 years of experience. What's more, Hun possesses a truly remarkable sense of style. We have complete faith in Hun's abilities. With Vietnam's recent economic development, traditional craft industries, like those elsewhere, face significant challenges. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While schools for this art form once existed, skilled artisans now take on apprentices to pass on their knowledge. Hun has trained four apprentices, but reports that younger generations are finding it difficult to master the technique. Rapid economic growth has unfortunately left traditional craftsmanship behind, and the number of artisans is expected to dwindle further. This trend is accelerating even more rapidly than in Japan, and with a lack of government systems to protect it, Vietnam's freehand embroidery faces a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
