About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln firing method that reaches temperatures exceeding 1200 degrees Celsius using firewood. The natural "fire marks" left directly on the ceramic body by the flames, along with the ash naturally settled from the burning wood, imbue the pieces with warm, rich colors and diverse variations – a realm unattainable by electric or gas kilns. Compared to conventional electric and gas kilns, the entire process of wood firing, from arranging the kiln, ignition, sealing, to cooling, takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the speed of stoking, and the placement within the kiln, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher breakage rate. Experienced wood-firing artists carefully consider kiln airflow when arranging pieces, planning the placement based on size, estimating flame paths, managing the addition of wood and charcoal, and controlling the firing intensity.
