■ About Freshwater Pearls
Pearl: Birthstone for June
Symbolism: Purity, Health, Longevity, Wealth, Dignity, Patience, Easy Childbirth
Also known as "dewdrops of the moon" or "mermaid's tears," they possess a beautiful sheen.
These pearls are cultivated within freshwater mussels and clams, such as Hyriidae and Unionidae.
Pearls have a history dating back to around 3200 BCE in Egypt, famously associated with Cleopatra dissolving one in vinegar.
Records indicate their use in other regions: around 2300 BCE in China, the 7th century BCE in Persia, and the 3rd century BCE in Rome.
In Japan, pearls are mentioned in ancient texts like the Nihon Shoki, Kojiki, and Manyoshu. The Gishi Wajinden records that Himiko's successor, Toyo, sent 5,000 pearls to the Cao Wei dynasty. The Manyoshu includes 56 poems featuring pearls.
Considered to be the gemstone that best suits Japanese women, resembling the natural complexion of their skin.
