Sanyu's oil painting "Deer" is a rare representative work of the artist's animal themes. According to the artist's complete works, among the nearly 300 oil paintings, only two are on the subject of deer. The little deer in this painting is covered with romantic pink spots all over its body. It is definitely a unique work in the artist's 40-year creative career.
Deer have a pivotal significance and status in traditional Chinese culture. From a totem in the eyes of the earliest nomadic peoples to the image of the mythical beast "Nine-Colored Deer" in the Dunhuang murals, it has evolved into a symbol of auspicious meaning because of its homophony with the "Lu" in "Fu Lu Shou Xi" (happiness, wealth, longevity and happiness). Its image carries this nation's common yearning for goodness and beauty. Chang Yu was also very fond of the image of the spotted deer. In 1934, the notice of his exhibition held at the Van Rhein Gallery in the Netherlands featured a small spotted deer that he had drawn himself.
Created between the 1930s and 1940s, Flowered Deer perfectly combines Sanyu’s unique artistic style of “the liveliness of oil painting and the spirit of ink painting”. In terms of brushwork, color and spatial treatment, it not only inherits the thinking and exploration of Western modern art, but also embodies Eastern aesthetic elements. In terms of painting techniques, Chang Yu has always pursued "simplification and simplification again", but simplification does not mean blandness, but rather using the purest lines and colors to express the deepest emotions in his heart. In "Deer", a few simple black lines outline the recumbent deer, which is concise and full of vitality. Unlike the docile image of deer in traditional Chinese paintings, it has a head slightly tilted to one side, and its eyes are firm and at ease with a hint of playfulness, which is quite similar to the sharp-eyed deer in Bada Shanren's paintings. It is white all over, accompanied by vivid pink spots. Against the pure black background, it looks like a glowing mythical beast, trapped in a boundless and even time-transcending realm of consciousness. It is as unrestrained and free as the artist himself, showing a spiritual power that transcends the mundane.

Born in 1895, Sanyu began learning painting from the famous painter Zhao Xi in 1910, and later studied at the Shanghai Art School. When the May Fourth Movement broke out, he received funding from his eldest brother to study in France, where he lived until his death in 1966, mostly in the Montparnasse art district. Due to its unique cultural background, its creations often show a connection between tradition and modernity, and between Eastern and Western art. By the 1920s, people had still not forgotten the pain brought by World War I, which made them tend to enjoy the present rather than look forward to the future. But it was precisely this mentality that broke the established social restrictions, and many new trends and fashions followed, such as the Art Deco trend and the miniskirt in the fashion world. People also began to be interested in porcelain, wood, and jade from the East. As an international art center, Paris attracted people from different regions and promoted exchanges between the East and the West. The free and open atmosphere formed the "Paris School", and Chang Yu was one of the representatives of the Paris School.
