[Synopsis]
"I" - Calligraphy by Lin Xi on the cover
If we say, "Fish are meant to swim,"
Why is it poetry?
Poetry has always been perceived as distant, seemingly effortless yet profoundly impactful.
It distills words, concealing meanings within verses. Then, the reader imagines, infers, and imagines again. The feelings that linger in the heart—are they bestowed by the author, or do they arise from the reader's own consciousness? The distinction becomes secondary.
"Fish are meant to swim" might seem as self-evident as "Mothers are women." However, when "meant to," "are," and "swim" are brought together, we can ponder:
Does "Fish are meant to swim" lack the nuance of "originally"?
Does "Fish originally were meant to swim" miss the certainty of "are"?
"Fish originally were meant to swim" omits "to," requiring a "to" for grammatical completeness.
Questions rarely have definitive answers, especially when a line of poetry resonates within you for reasons unknown.
The subtlety of language reveals its power. The freedom of poetry allows for a connection that feels both distant and intimately close.
Perhaps today is the moment to read a new poem and let everything settle.
As Lin Xi writes in the preface of this book:
//Birds are meant to fly
They are meant to fly
Yet ostriches do not live their lives
in awkward shame
Longing to fly
has always been a human habit
And perhaps only humans
conceive thoughts that transcend habit//
//Fish are meant to swim
Birds are meant to fly
Humans are meant to
walk with their feet
And as they walk
they paint impossible dreams//
//Thus dreams are realized
without confronting reality
A person who dares to swim
is a fish
A person who wishes to fly
is a bird//
Do not ask "What is the meaning of life?" Do not overthink. Just as animals act on instinct,
as fish swim and birds fly, living is simply this.
Lin Xi's new series, "Lin Xi's Poems," features 100 poems.
*Some poems in this book are selected from "Can Imperfection Be?", "Summer Flowers, Autumn Leaves Are Just Right," and "Have You Reached Your Doomsday Today?"
