The black areas are specially treated with vulcanization. Q: What is the common "vulcanization treatment" for Nepalese jewelry? A: When silver jewelry turns black, "oxidation" is a common folk term. Oxidation refers to the reaction of a substance with oxygen. However, silver (jewelry) turning black is a reaction with "sulfur" in the air, forming "silver sulfide" on the surface of the silver (jewelry). This can appear as black, coffee brown, light brown, dark brown, or reddish-brown. Normally, silver (jewelry) will lose its luster and turn black if not properly maintained.
