We often get asked, "How is freehand embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery involves a machine reading an embroidery pattern and automatically stitching it. This results in perfectly uniform and identical embroidery every time. In contrast, "freehand embroidery" is an artisan skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric to create the embroidery pattern. Because it's made by human hands, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand-stitching. The process involves transferring an initial sketch onto the fabric and then, while referencing the original artwork, the artisan stitches in sync with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – a remarkable craft that's hard to imagine. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, just 10 can execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled isn't enough; embroidery also requires a sense of artistry. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, we entrust our designs to Hun, an artisan with exceptional skill. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, bringing 31 years of dedicated experience. Moreover, Hun possesses a truly remarkable artistic sense. We have complete faith in Hun's abilities. Due to recent economic development, traditional crafts in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of individuals capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people learning this skill today. As the number of artisans is expected to decrease further, Vietnam's freehand embroidery is facing a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
