In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt. This was not only a major military operation in human history but also a significant turning point in the history of France, Egypt, and archaeology. While the expedition to Egypt was not a personal success for Bonaparte, it marked a new beginning in his life, prompting him to take a gamble and seize supreme power in France using his reputation. For Egypt, the French invasion ended centuries of rule by the Ottoman Empire and the Mamluk dynasty, signaling the dawn of a new era. From then on, Egypt not only opened its doors to Western technology and trade but also embarked on a tumultuous period of colonialism versus national independence, and the confrontation between modern civilization and ancient culture, the cultural clashes of which continue to this day. In terms of archaeology, Napoleon brought an unprecedented 167 scholars and experts with his invading army. As early as 1799, French soldiers discovered a stone tablet in the town of Rosetta, inscribed with Greek, Demotic (a cursive form of hieroglyphs), and ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic scripts. This would provide a crucial key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
