【Kyoto Unsodo Postcards - Kamisaka Sekka Series】
Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) is a pivotal figure in modern Japanese decorative arts.
He masterfully blended the opulent compositions of the Rimpa school with a contemporary design sensibility, earning him the title "The Last Rimpa Artist."
His works frequently feature natural themes such as flowers, birds, landscapes, and auspicious motifs, embodying an aesthetic philosophy of "coexistence of the classical and the modern" through vibrant colors and the beauty of negative space.
His creations not only influenced traditional Japanese crafts but also inspired the development of modern design and printmaking.
【About Kyoto Unsodo】
Unsodo was founded in the 24th year of the Meiji era (1891).
It is the only publisher in Japan that still preserves the traditional crafts of hand-pulled woodblock printing and bookbinding.
The brand name "Unsodo" is derived from the title of a book inscribed by the literati painter Tomioka Tessai.
"Un" (芸) is an alternative form of "Gei" (藝), meaning art, while "So" (艸) refers to fragrant herbs,
symbolizing "art that is as fragrant and enduring as herbs."
Initially established by publishing art books and kimono pattern reference collections,
Unsodo later expanded into areas such as craft design and printmaking.
Today, Unsodo continues the century-old woodblock printing techniques in Kyoto,
meticulously recreating the classic works of modern Japanese artists with exquisite color layering and delicate lines,
serving as a vital link between traditional and contemporary aesthetics.
This series of postcards not only conveys blessings but also carries the legacy of Japanese aesthetics and printing craftsmanship.
With the tactile quality of the paper and the warmth of woodblock colors, each message becomes a reunion with time.
