In late 2024, just before a planned business trip to Korea, a sudden lockdown was announced. The lockdown was lifted just before our flight, and we arrived safely in South Korea. However, we soon found ourselves trapped in a subway car, with protestors flooding the platform, pushing us to the point where breathing became difficult and movement was impossible. We were practically suspended. We kept thinking, "What should we do? Will this turn into a stampede?" We encouraged each other to stay calm, find ways to breathe, keep our heads up, and crucially, stay on our feet to avoid falling. Thankfully, after a few stops, the overwhelming crowd disembarked at Yeouido Station, leaving us shaken and tearful. A few stops later, as we exited the subway, we unexpectedly stumbled upon Hyejin's exhibition. The cats' languid and serene postures instantly calmed the turbulent storm we had just experienced. We, who had felt so lost and frightened, felt as if we had firmly returned to solid ground. From the bottom of our hearts, we realized how wonderful it is to have cats in the world. Hyejin's cat creations are truly treasures. And so, this unexpected representation came to be. 🤍 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791025978_c361304614_c.jpg Hyejin’s style merges modern sensibilities with traditional Korean techniques, developed through slow, deliberate creation and hand-painting. We are all deeply fond of the nostalgic, retro feel in his works, which strongly evoke the folk painting scroll style of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923222_46ac7b4975_c.jpg Every stroke meticulously outlines incredibly intricate details, making these pieces truly captivating for long observation. Creating art with traditional Korean techniques requires immense patience. The artist applies color layer by layer, achieving rich textures and deep, saturated hues. Even tiny details like butterflies and grasshoppers are rendered with remarkable soulfulness. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791008469_5cfdb8271f_c.jpg Each painting captures the essence of cats sharing our space. The cats' “unhurried pace” and “quiet companionship” embody the message the artist wishes to convey. Hyejin frequently holds solo exhibitions in Korea and has been creating art for over a decade. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791102340_09288edf64_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923372_b9e7b97b2c_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923357_30bd7feac8_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923327_ebb7b5d094_b.jpg Using her own cats as primary subjects, Hyejin portrays them with a playful yet sharp gaze, embodying a "fiercely cute" and distinctive personality. There's a sense of conflicting yet harmonious balance, a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity. By incorporating contemporary artistic styles and characters, she depicts the lives and thoughts of animals within traditional art. She utilizes less common materials like Korean paper (Hanji) and the meticulous Gongbi technique. This paper lends a gentle warmth to the overall color palette, while the precise Gongbi lines ensure exquisite detail in the artwork. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791008479_1a3b230ced_c.jpg This warm feeling, this unique combination, allows contemporary painting styles to integrate seamlessly.
