Rare 18th-19th Century French Rococo Style Gilded Bronze Inkwell and Pen Washer Cup Set of Two Rococo style, originating in 18th-century France, is an aesthetic characterized by soft, pastel hues in decoration, interior design, and art. It blends asymmetry, curves, carvings, and visual trickery to imbue static objects with a sense of movement. This is an exceptionally rare set of inkwells. While inkwells are commonly made of simple copper, this set features gilded bronze. The gilding technique is more durable, substantial, and possesses a warmer luster than gold leaf application or electroplating. As a result, after more than 200 years, it still gleams captivatingly under the light. The gilding process involves dissolving gold in mercury to create a paste, which is then applied to the bronze surface and heated to evaporate the mercury, leaving the gold adhered to the object. However, due to the toxic fumes produced during mercury evaporation, this technique was officially prohibited in France in the early 20th century. The design of this set is remarkably ornate, with every element meticulously crafted. The irregular design, in particular, creates a dynamic visual effect when viewed from different angles, giving it a sense of lively movement. The bas-relief carvings are exquisite, especially the faces of the cherubs on either side, which are rendered with remarkable clarity and charm. Most notably, it includes a gilded feather pen washer cup – an extremely rare find that I have personally not encountered before. This set is truly a treasure worth collecting.
