This wool cardigan takes its name from the Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell, the seventh generation. Unlike the traditional Aran sweaters used by Irish fishermen, the cardigan's origins lie elsewhere. It's believed the cardigan was inspired by the woolen vests worn by British army officers during the Crimean War. Indeed, early cardigans were first introduced as vests. However, the modern, sleeved version appeared by 1864, and by the early 20th century, sleeved versions became more common, becoming a wardrobe staple for both men and women by the 1920s. While cardigans are often associated with women's fashion today, the wool cardigan was initially a men's garment. It transitioned into women's fashion in the late 1880s and saw widespread sales from the 1890s onwards. It became famously integrated into the "IVY Style," where it was an essential item. In academic settings, it even served as a collegiate jacket, later becoming known as the letterman cardigan.
