About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln firing method that reaches temperatures above 1200 degrees Celsius using firewood. The natural "fire marks" left by the direct flames on the clay body, and the ash naturally falling from the burning wood, imbue the works with a warm, rich, and varied color that cannot be achieved with electric or gas kilns. Compared to ordinary electric and gas kilns, the entire wood firing process—from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors such as climate humidity, wood dryness, human speed of stoking, and kiln stacking positions, can all affect the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate. Experienced wood-firing artisans consider the airflow speed within the kiln when stacking. They meticulously plan the placement of pieces of different sizes, estimate the upward trajectory of the flame path, how to stoke wood and charcoal, and the precise control of the fire.
