This bracelet originates from England, dating back to the 1920s Arts & Crafts movement, a creation of the celebrated jeweler Bernard Instone. Crafted entirely from sterling silver, it features intricate enamelwork in various shades of blue.
Born in Birmingham, England in 1891, Bernard Instone displayed exceptional artistic talent at the young age of 12, earning a scholarship to the Birmingham School of Jewellery. He furthered his studies in Berlin before returning to Birmingham in 1920 to establish his own workshop, Langstone Silver Works.
Bernard Instone's pieces are highly recognizable. Drawing inspiration from nature, he meticulously crafted exquisite works that perfectly embodied the tenets of the Arts & Crafts movement. Floral motifs, delicate leaves, and the use of colorful enamels and semi-precious stones are characteristic of his style.
The bracelet is centered around a floral design, with a multi-layered, three-dimensional floral base adorned with enamels in two rich shades of blue. The extending dots and connecting circles are rendered in a deeper sapphire blue enamel. The interplay of various blues, both varied and complementary, imbues the piece with a fresh yet refined texture. Its rounded contours lend a charming, childlike quality, full of playful spirit.
Each link of the bracelet can be fastened, offering flexibility in wear. Please refer to the size details. The overall condition is good for an antique piece, showing normal signs of oxidation and wear. The enamel is remarkably well-preserved with almost no damage. As a century-old antique, it is not in pristine new condition.
About the Arts & Crafts Movement:
The Arts & Crafts Movement emerged in the late 19th century, largely as a reaction against the "soulless" mass-produced goods of the Industrial Revolution. Pioneered by figures like William Morris and John Ruskin in Britain, it championed a reverence for nature, the integration of craftsmanship and artistry, and opposed the separation of design from production. Consequently, jewelry from the Arts & Crafts movement was handmade, eschewing machine production, and incorporated natural themes such as flowers, insects, and other natural elements into its designs. Its influence extended beyond jewelry to encompass architecture, furniture, and tableware, spreading across Europe and North America. It is often seen as a precursor to Art Nouveau, although distinct differences in style and content exist between the two movements.
