After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Aichi Prefectural University of Arts, he went to study at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art in the late 1980s, constantly drawing inspiration from Eastern and Western cultures throughout his life. Nara’s childhood during Japan’s postwar period, when more people were exposed to Western pop culture such as comic books, Disney animation and pop music, is often cited as an early influence on his work. Although he has always stated that he does not draw inspiration from Japanese manga, his distinctive large-eyed portraits often prompt art critics to draw parallels between the two. On the contrary, he insists that by pairing innocent children with cynical expressions or incompatible objects (such as sharp knives), his works are elevated to a different spiritual level, reflecting on important religious and philosophical issues. Nara has many loyal fans and has held many solo exhibitions around the world, and held a major retrospective exhibition that traveled to many places between 2003 and 2005.
