In its traditional, narrow sense, it specifically refers to jade unearthed in the Hetian region of Xinjiang, renowned worldwide, especially its "pebble" form. In a broader sense, Hetian Jade refers to soft jade (true jade). During the unification of China by Emperor Qin Shi Huang, Hetian Jade was known as "Kunshan Jade" because it was produced in the Kunlun Mountains. Later, it was called "Yutian Jade" as it was located within the "Yutian Kingdom." It was only officially named "Hetian Jade" in 1883 (the ninth year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign) when the Hetian Directly Administered Prefecture was established. Although Hetian Jade is named after Hetian in Xinjiang, it is not a geographical concept. It does not exclusively refer to jade produced in the Xinjiang Hetian region, but rather a type of product name. China names any stone with an actinolite content of over 98% as Hetian Jade, falling within national standards. This means that regardless of whether it originates from Xinjiang, Qinghai, Liaoning, Russia, Canada, or South Korea, if its main component is actinolite, it can be called Hetian Jade. Hetian Jade comes in a rich variety of colors, including white, cyan, gray, light to dark green, yellow to brown, and black. Hetian Jade is a metamorphic rock formed by the contact metasomatism between magnesian marble and intermediate-acidic magmatic rocks. It contains an aggregate of minerals such as actinolite, hornblende, and tremolite. Its chemical composition is a hydrated calcium magnesium silicate, with the chemical formula Ca2(Mg,Fe)5[Si8O22](OH)2. Its density ranges from 2.95-3.17, and its Mohs hardness is between 6.0-6.5. The main structure of Hetian Jade is metamorphic structure, including felt-like cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microfibrous-cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microfibrous-nephrite metamorphic structure, microplatelet-cryptocrystalline metamorphic structure, microplatelet metamorphic structure, and micro-radial (brush-like) metamorphic structure. Additionally, it includes less common relic granular structure and replacement corona structure. Although the mineral grains of Hetian Jade have a certain orientation, it is not strong. Occasionally, grains exhibit undulatory extinction and plastic deformation. These indicate that the stress intensity of the metamorphic action was within the elastic limit of the minerals. The main textures of Hetian Jade include massive texture and schistose texture, with massive texture being more common. ●●Playing with jade emphasizes "mutual nurturing between person and jade" A consistent saying regarding playing with jade is: "The person nurtures the jade for three years, and the jade nurtures the person for a lifetime." Jade contains rich trace elements, which are activated by the heat generated from handling the jade. However, there is a simpler method, known as "mutual nurturing between person and jade," which is the most straightforward way to play with and care for jade when worn close to the body! The sweat and oils secreted by the body effectively moisturize the jade, making it more lustrous and bright.
