The kommen in Noh masks is a mask that represents a cute young woman with a hint of innocence, and is thought to be the earliest to be created among the many types of young women's masks.
The character ``ko'' does not just mean small, but also ``young'' and ``cute.'' The character ``ko'' means ``young'' and ``cute,'' and a characteristic feature of the design is that the hair lines are undisturbed and flow naturally, which can be said to be a symbol of youth. Thing.
The main characteristics of Komen are expressed as ``hikimayu'', where the eyebrows are plucked and the eyebrows are drawn in the middle of the forehead, and ``ohaguro'', where the teeth are painted black, which were seen in the Heian period. is impressive.
People in the Heian period wore blackened teeth as make-up to prevent cavities, but the biggest effect seems to have been to make the mouth look smaller.
And to make her skin look fair (there is a saying that fair skin hides seven troubles), she applied powder.
It seems that the effect of having drawn eyebrows and black teeth was to ``make the face look longer and thinner.''
There is a word "omonaga" which is an expression used in ancient Japan to express a desirable contour, but when the face is long (large) and the mouth is small (ochobokuchi), and when the eyebrows and eyes are separated, it gives an impression of the eyes. The skin also becomes thinner, so the entire face becomes thinner. Apparently that was the beauty of men and women at the time.
In this production, I created my ideal small mask using various surface stamped works as reference.
We put a lot of thought into creating the prototype, as small differences in fleshing out or changes in lines can make a big difference in expression.
I really respect the people who carve Noh masks from wood, called Noh mask makers.
Generally speaking, Noh masks made by modern Noh mask artists are often made with a worn-out look, so this work also has the hair part made to look like it has deteriorated over time, and the lips. The coloring is intentionally applied in an uneven manner.
One size fits all for both men and women.
It's about the same size as a typical faceted mask (total length 21cm), and is a mask that can actually be worn. Please check your face size.
If you are a woman or have a small face, I think it will fit your face perfectly, but if your face is normal size or larger, please wear it on your chin. Since it is FRP, it is strong against light impacts and will not break easily.
