A ritual implement from Japanese Esoteric Buddhism.
20th Century Vajra Staff.
Acquired from an overseas collector.
Formerly used by ascetic monks in the mountains.
The staff was used to protect them from evil spirits and malevolent entities.
Era: 20th Century.
This is a shorter, non-ascetic version.
The original wooden shaft is missing.
The current wooden grip appears to be a later addition.
Such ritual implements are generally less valuable than ritual bells and vajra pestles, and their prices are not typically high.
This was not a category I was personally collecting.
However, when purchasing old bells and vajra pestles,
the seller requested I take this along with them.
Considering the cost, including air freight, it was about 2000 NTD.
