Water-milled cinnabar, Emperor cinnabar, Purple-gold cinnabar, and Crystal cinnabar are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**「Water-milled cinnabar」**
**True red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, frosted luster that will become brighter with wear, forming a patina.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding cinnabar into fine particles to form a paste, mixing it with water, allowing it to settle, and then collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is then allowed to settle again for purification (the water-milling method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using ancient methods. Fine mineral flashes can still be seen in the cross-section.
**「Emperor cinnabar」**
**The color is closer to true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.**
The production method involves purifying natural raw cinnabar ore through multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-milling/high polishing**, followed by ancient pressing methods. Emperor cinnabar has almost no surface mineral flashes, but has them internally. The surface is treated with a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic texture, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic sheen.
**「Purple-gold cinnabar」**
**The color is purplish-red, and the hardness is slightly lower than Emperor cinnabar.**
The production method involves multiple processes like **crushing/grinding/screening** from natural raw cinnabar ore, but **without water-milling purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has scattered small mineral flashes, creating a starry effect.
**「Crystal cinnabar」**
**The color is purplish-red and translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. The crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface, and under light, they are transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogram. Ancient miners would excavate mines, and the character depicts taking minerals from within a well, with a dot representing the object extracted from the mine. This object is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar was called "朱砂" (zhūshā), with "丹" and "朱" describing the color and "砂" describing the shape, referring to irregularly granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also the main component of "Eight Treasures Seal Paste," an indispensable ink.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the positive energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a strong yang magnetic field. We can observe that jade feels cool in the hand, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals for writing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and suppressing negative energies. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme item for enhancing luck, suppressing evil, driving away spirits, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune, wealth, and well-being.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" lists cinnabar as a superior herbal medicine, often used in treatments to calm the spirit, detoxify, and alleviate insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character, soothe the eyes, and nurture the heart.
**> Authentication**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a significant weight. You can use the following methods for authentication:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat through an intermediary. It is generally not recommended to burn the finished product directly, as it is difficult to control the time and area. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.)
>. Real cinnabar can draw orange-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area to draw a line, or use the complimentary bead for testing.)
**> Care**
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid Contact with Metals
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments, you can wear it with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle, so be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If you find that your cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will alter its original luster! You can wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth, and it will recover after a period of time.
6. Oiling for Preservation
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the surface to absorb the oil, making it more lustrous and bright. After applying oil, seal it in a brocade box, possibly wrapping it in plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry you wear with your hands, allowing the surface to absorb a thin layer of oil. Over time, it will appear more antique and elegant.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
