Newborn dolphins are dark grey, turning white as they mature. Their skin can appear pink due to increased blood circulation during activity, hence the nickname "pink dolphin." Affected by the northeast monsoon, the Taiwan Strait experiences rough seas for over half the year, making sightings rare. After mid-March of the lunar calendar, the waves calm, and the dolphins gradually appear. As mid-March coincides with the birthday of the sea goddess Mazu, the dolphins seen near the coast were perceived as coming to celebrate her birthday, leading locals to call them "Mazu fish." Due to shallow waters, their habitat lies at the interface of land and sea, making them particularly vulnerable to human threats. Research indicates fewer than 70 Taiwanese Humpback Dolphins remain.
