In ancient times, embroidery threads were derived from natural dyes, primarily using white (achieved by sun-bleaching the threads), brown (from walnuts, chestnut shells, oak bark, etc.), and red (from berries). It wasn't until the 18th-19th centuries, with the advent of more affordable mineral or chemical dyes like black and blue, that these colors became accessible and were considered symbols of wealth and nobility. This piece, likely a one-piece dress from the Chernihiv region in the early 20th century (circa 1920s-1930s), is made from 100% hand-woven hemp fiber and is entirely hand-stitched. It features embroidery in red and black, colors considered most precious by Ukrainians: red symbolizes love, while black represents prosperity brought by abundant harvests (referencing Ukraine's fertile black soil).
