Standing Up with Gentle Strength
Ensuring the Voices of the Disadvantaged Are Heard
"She always finds new ways to bloom."
**Helga Nowotny**
**— Professor Emerita of Science and Technology Studies, ETH Zurich**
This memoir is by Professor Cheung Miyoung, a distinguished psychologist and a pioneer for gender equality in Hong Kong. Born into a prominent traditional family in Hong Kong, she recognized the inherent injustices faced by women in both the family and society from an early age. After obtaining her Ph.D. in Psychology in the United States, she returned to Hong Kong to dedicate herself to academia and public service, becoming a lifelong advocate for the disadvantaged and a catalyst for social change. Professor Cheung founded Hong Kong's first Gender Research Centre and led the establishment of the Equal Opportunities Commission, promoting anti-discrimination policies and dedicating herself to services for grassroots women. Within a male-dominated academic environment, she broke through barriers to become the first female Pro-Vice-Chancellor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, bringing gender awareness into university administration. In her research, she challenged the universality of Western psychological theories, creating a personality inventory tailored for Chinese culture, thereby making a significant contribution to international psychological research.
Looking back over seventy years, she has forged a path of change, both warm and impactful, with gentle yet resolute steps, witnessing the trajectory of societal progress—even with a soft pace, dawn will eventually break.
