The protagonists, Kitri and Basilio, are deeply in love. However, Kitri's father insists on marrying her to a wealthy middle-aged man, Gamache. Thus, with the help of friends, they begin their escape. Elsewhere, Don Quixote mistakes Kitri for his dream lady, Dulcinea. He valiantly battles windmill monsters he believes might harm Kitri. After the fierce fight, Don Quixote, exhausted, falls asleep. In his dream, Kitri and his dream lady, Dulcinea, turn out to be the same person. Kitri and Basilio are eventually found by Lorenzo. To prevent Kitri from marrying Gamache, Basilio fakes his own death. Don Quixote helps Kitri persuade Lorenzo to allow her to have a "spiritually wedded" ceremony with Basilio. Lorenzo reluctantly agrees. Unexpectedly, Basilio then "comes back to life"! In the third act of the ballet, everyone celebrates the wedding of Kitri and Basilio.
