He was a 20th century Japanese woodblock print artist who was active in the shinsakuhanga movement and later joined the shin-hanga movement. His paintings are still widely circulated in major art collections and museums in Europe and the United States. He is one of the important figures in the revival of modern Japanese woodblock prints.
