▰▰▰▰▰▰Damascene▰▰▰▰▰▰ Spanish Damascene craftsmanship, a metal inlay technique, traces its origins back over 2,000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It later arrived on the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasions, and at the same time, it was introduced to Japan via the Silk Road. The Moors, who were Arabs from Asia and North Africa, practiced Islam and were collectively known as "los moros" or "los musulmanes" at the time. They ruled a large part of Spain for over 300 years after their invasion. Even after being driven out of central Spain, they maintained prosperity in the Andalusia region of southern Iberia for more than three centuries. After nearly 8 centuries of rule, they were finally expelled in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, marking the completion of the country's unification. Although the Arab kingdom had vanished, it profoundly influenced Spanish culture in various aspects, leaving behind a rich heritage. The technique involves using iron or a copper alloy as the base. Fine lines are then etched onto the surface, and thin sheets of pure gold and silver are shaped into patterns and hammered into these grooves. A subsequent process of enameling and firing prevents oxidation and rust of the base metal.
