Their habitat is in temperate mountain forests with dense bamboo growth, such as broadleaf forests, mixed coniferous-broadleaf forests, and subalpine coniferous forests, at altitudes of 1,200-4,100 meters, primarily in areas between 1,500-3,000 meters above sea level. Since food is available year-round, they only use tree hollows or caves as temporary shelters during cold and harsh weather and do not hibernate. Habitat destruction and fragmentation are the biggest threats to Giant Pandas, with their distribution spread across mountains separated by vast agricultural lands. A further threat stems from their dependence on bamboo for food. Bamboo undergoes synchronized flowering and death cycles approximately every 15 to 120 years, and fragmented habitats further restrict the movement of Giant Pandas during these times.
