【Synopsis】
Anthony Wong: "One of the things people most regret is writing an autobiography... I'm just a little actor who can spin a good yarn, and I'm already regretting it..."
This book chronicles Anthony Wong's dramatic forty years of life, from childhood to the present:
In the Chinese society of the 1960s, a single-parent mixed-race child was an incongruous sight. Anthony Wong grew up as a wild child in the margins. His boarding school days were emotionally and physically scarring, though thankfully, some teachers offered warmth during his loneliness. His difficult path to adulthood forged resilience and wisdom.
In 1985, he enrolled in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, finally finding his true calling. After graduation, he joined TVB, starring in the well-known series "The Legend of the Dragon." Anthony Wong, it seems, truly is a man from the "jiang hu" (a world of martial arts and underworld dealings).
In 1990, at the age of 29, Anthony Wong officially entered the film industry. In 1994, he won his first Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor for "The Untold Story," followed by further Best Actor wins at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1999 for "Beast Cops" and in 2019 for "Still Human." In 2022, "The Sunny Side of the Street" earned him the Golden Horse Award for Best Actor, with numerous other accolades to his name.
Through stage productions and arts education, his theatre company "Theatre Horizon" offers audiences not just entertainment but also spiritual enrichment. Anthony Wong firmly believes that where there are people, there is hope. After a decade of trials and tribulations, the theatre troupe is growing stronger, and he himself has found his path.
In 2017, Anthony Wong posted a photo of his parents holding him on Facebook. The story garnered widespread attention, and with the help of enthusiastic individuals, he located his elder sister and two elder brothers at the age of 56. Anthony Wong spent most of his life healing his childhood wounds, and his method was to let go of burdens and accept himself. The puzzle of his life was finally complete.
Editor's Note: "In 'Anthony Wong's Recollections,' we see the Anthony Wong whose acting is recognized by the public and the industry. Behind his artistic achievements, the journey was never smooth. He doesn't hide his true feelings of anger, disappointment, and helplessness when faced with difficulties. How did he persevere through setbacks that could have made him give up?
He once said, 'My life has had many critical junctures and many moments of enlightenment.'
...
Choices can arise even when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel or crossroads ahead. When you feel you've reached a dead end, with nothing left? If the choice itself is an option, you can create 'choices' for yourself. At the very least, you can choose how you view 'yourself.'
Perhaps we haven't experienced life as dramatic as Anthony Wong's, but everyone has their own critical junctures. When you reach one, find a way to change. That 'desire' to change is a choice.
'You are the person you choose to be' and 'living authentically' are what I most want to share after reading this book."
