Every time I brainstorm a design, I always look to mix and match different cultural mediums. When we first launched this Crybaby design—a mashup of Supreme-style aesthetics and internet meme culture—one of the more subtle inspirations came from the eccentric, talented singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez and her album Cry Baby. Split-dyed hair, a gap-tooth smile, and a sweet voice paired with eerie, gothic pop melodies—that’s her iconic vibe. Released in 2016, her whimsical Cry Baby album cover hides 13 tracks that delve deep into the brutal realities of growing up. In the opening track "Cry Baby," the protagonist is like a modern-day Lin Daiyu—inherently sentimental and hyper-sensitive. She cried so much at birth that she turned her room into an ocean, earning the disdain of her mother and the nickname "Cry Baby." Melanie wrote a few incredibly poignant lines in that song: Your heart's too big for your body It's why you won't fit inside They're pouring out Where everyone can see They call you cry baby, cry baby But you don't fucking care Cry baby, cry baby So you laugh through your tears No matter how vast the world is, it might not always have room for the most sensitive and vulnerable hearts. Crying doesn't help—or maybe it does.
