This artwork, created by the renowned neuroscientist Dr. Franz Joseph Gall and his student Dr. Spurzheim,
was published in 1834 and showcases the division of brain region functions in phrenology.

Phrenology is a doctrine that studies the correlation between skull shape and psychological characteristics.
This diagram illustrates different regions of the skull, marking 35 distinct "organs,"
each associated with different psychological or personality traits. These areas are presented through external markings and labeled with different numbers.
For instance, certain regions are linked to traits such as intelligence, emotion, and morality, while others relate to willpower or social aptitude.

What is Phrenology?
Phrenology (also known as cranioscopy) is a pseudoscience from the 19th century. This doctrine proposed that different regions of the brain were responsible for distinct psychological functions,
and the manifestation of these functions could be inferred by observing the shape and protrusions of the skull.
The core concept of phrenology is that human characteristics like personality, intelligence, and emotions could be determined from the external shape of the head, particularly the bumps and indentations of the cranium.

Basic Concepts of Phrenology:
1. Brain Region Division: Phrenology posited that the brain was divided into multiple regions, each responsible for different psychological or behavioral traits.
These regions included intellect, memory, morality, and emotions. The degree of development in each region was believed to influence the corresponding psychological characteristic.
2. Skull Shape Inference: Adherents of phrenology believed that different brain regions corresponded to different parts of the skull.
Therefore, the external features of the skull (such as bumps or depressions) could be used to infer a person's personality, intelligence, and emotions.
3. Applications of Phrenology: This doctrine was once used for diagnosing individual personalities and was widely applied in society to fields such as education, career choice, and criminology.
Some phrenologists even determined a person's vocational suitability or social behavior based on the shape of their skull.
Phrenology was highly popular in the early 19th century and influenced the development of psychology and neurology at the time.
However, with advancements in scientific technology, particularly in the 20th century, the development of brain anatomy, neuroscience, and psychology gradually proved that phrenology lacked scientific basis.
Modern science has demonstrated that there is no direct correlation between skull shape and brain function, and phrenology is therefore considered a pseudoscience.
Despite this, this diagram remains a historical record of early 19th-century brain anatomy and psychological theories,
and it had a certain impact on the study of neuroscience and behavior at the time, also influencing psychological interest in the study of brain functional areas.
